Holiday in USA: Books

As I’ve mentioned, I didn’t get through many books on holiday, but I did flex my bookishness in the places we went and the things I bought, because how could I not? I’ve yet to find a good bookshop in Charlotte NC – and I’ll be going back there so any recommendations would be welcome – but New York City of course does not suffer from that problem. However, we did have limited luggage space, so I tried to keep my book purchases as minimal as possible.

Bookish T-shirts

I bought these T-shirts from Out of Print clothing, who have a fantastic range of book covers and bookish quotes on clothes and other stuff. Okay, they’re not books but they were still a great buy.

NYC books

With excellent timing, the issue of the New Yorker on sale the second week of our holiday was their summer fiction special. And when we visited the Strand Bookstore I decided to limit myself to interesting secondhand books, editions I wouldn’t easily get at home. So I picked up:

The Dark Labyrinth by Lawrence Durrell
Forever by Judy Blume
Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris
Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut Jr

New Yorker covers

In possibly our most touristy moment, we bought some card-mounted New Yorker covers from a street stall. I love the artwork of the New Yorker, and we figured they were a pretty stylish souvenir.

NYC comics

As we found excellent comic shops, we bought a whole bunch of comics. (This is the subset I intend to read. Ones bought just for Tim, or ones we’d already read but bought for exclusive cover designs, I haven’t included above. It’s a much bigger pile!) I now have:

Hawkeye by Matt Fraction and David Aja, issue 15
All-New Hawkeye by Jeff Lemire and Ramon Perez, issue 3
Spider-Gwen by Jason Latour and Robbi Rodriguez, issue 2
Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency by Chris Ryall and Tony Akins, issue 1
Fight Club 2 by Chuck Palahniuk and Cameron Stewart, issue 1
Rocket Girl by Brandon Montclare and Amy Reeder, volume 1

It’s not a huge pile of books but at the rate I’m currently reading it’ll keep my busy for a while. I really need to make more time for reading. Maybe I’ll go read right now.

Happy Sunday, folks!
