Sunday Salon: Merry Christmas!

The Sunday SalonI hope you are all having wonderful Christmases/end-of-year breaks. It’s still unseasonably warm and our time with family was brief, but it’s been lovely. We had a big family party at my Grandad’s yesterday for the first time in years and it was just like the Boxing Days of my childhood – completely wonderful.

Did you get any good presents for Christmas? I got the usual mix of DVDs, CDs, chocolate and random awesomeness, such as a diary stuffed with tickets for awesome events throughout 2016 (Tim’s pretty great at gift-giving). And of course, as usual, I got lots of books. I love getting new books, always.

Yes, that’s a Spider Gwen hoodie, plus:

Fish by Bianca Bagnarelli
Fish Easy by Mitch Tonks
Anya’s Ghost by Vera Brosgol
Ivy by Sarah Oleksyk
Fun Home by Alison Bechdel
Never Goodnight by Coco Moodysson
Angela Carter’s Book of Fairy Tales
The Lady in the Van
by Alan Bennett
In Certain Circles by Elizabeth Harrower
Here by Wislawa Szymborska
The Story of a New Name by Elena Ferrante

I’m looking forward to reading every single one of them. I have bags to unpack and book reviews to write, but first a little catch up: what I’ve finished reading, am reading now and plan to read next. The last book I finished was Fish by Bianca Bagnarelli (one of my Christmas presents), which is a beautiful story about a grieving child from small publisher Nobrow. This is a graphic short story project aimed at giving a springboard to young graphic novelists. It’s a pretty cool idea.

Right now I’m reading three different books and can’t decide which to stick with. I’d like to tick off another title from Classics Club but on the other hand, holidays are for fun reading and I’m not finding most of the classics on my list fun. Maybe I’ll try cleansing my palate with another one of my new graphic novels! I’m particularly excited to read Never Goodnight by Coco Moodysson, having watched the film made of it – We Are the Best! – a few weeks ago. It’s a fab film and I can’t see how it could fail to be a great book. Teenage girl punks!

What are you reading? Do you find more or less time for reading over Christmas? Happy holidays!
